When is the new Knaus Berry Farm in Homestead opening? Here’s what we know
By now, Miami’s cinnamon roll fanatics are usually planning their first trips of the season to Knaus Berry Farm in Homestead, dreaming of the iconic desserts and wondering if they should pick up a loaf of dilly bread, too.
The beloved family-run farm shop, which since the 1950s has been selling baked goods, fresh produce, jams and shakes, usually opens the last Tuesday of October. But in August, a new ownership group took over the landmark, announcing it would leave its home at 15980 SW 248th St. for a new location nearby, and the process of reopening has resulted in a bit of a delay to the annual tradition.
Co-owner and general manager Joel White said the team is aiming to open in its new location at 16790 SW 177th Ave. by the end of November.
“Our entire team is working hard to get the new space ready, and we truly can’t wait to welcome both longtime fans and new visitors soon,” he said.
The new Knaus will be a little different from the original, which started as a roadside stand where brothers Russell and Ray sold strawberries and Ray’s wife Barbara sold baked goods. For starters, it will be open on Sundays, and you’ll be able to use a credit card for purchases instead of adhering to the longtime cash-only rule. There will also be more parking.
The biggest question from longtime fans, however, is this: Will the cinnamon rolls be the same?
White and his partner Sunil Bhatt say yes. Longtime general manager and former co-owner Thomas Blocher plans to stay involved as a kitchen consultant; he and other members of the Knaus family ran the operation since Russell and Ray retired in 1990.
The team is also relocating the original shake stand along with much of the equipment from the old site to the new.
“We are working closely with Thomas and the entire Knaus team to make sure our new location can produce all the baked goods exactly as they were in the past,” White said.
