Unsafe food and 65 flies at a popular Coral Gables restaurant, inspection says
A lot of flies and a lot of food suffering from “temperature abuse” lowlighted last week’s state inspection failure at a popular Coral Gables hangout.
Wednesday’s routine inspection added Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen, 65 Alhambra Plaza, to the list of Coral Gables or Coral Gables adjacent places that have face-planted inspections over the last month: Habana Vieja, 2475 SW 37th Ave.; Al’s Coffee Shop, inside 2100 Ponce de Leon; Milam’s Market and Matsuri, in the Red Bird Center strip mall at Red and Bird roads.
Here are some of the 22 violations, four of which were High Priority violations, found Wednesday at Bay 13:
MORE: Maggots on decaying rodents, gnawed bags of food at Miami restaurant supplier
“Accumulation of black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine/bin.”
In the kitchen, the inspector found the air exploding with flies: at least 10 landing on the walls, at least 10 “in the air by the mop sink area in the kitchen area;” 20 or more “in the air by the reach-in cooler;” 10 or more by a kitchen garbage can; and 15 or more “in the air, above the prep sink area.”
The soap dispenser at the kitchen entrance handwash sink wasn’t working.
No paper towels or air blower for drying hands were at the handwash sink next to the three-compartment sink.
“Some auxiliary cutting boards with marks were no longer cleanable.”
MORE: Roaches in pasta. Dead rodent. The worst Miami metro restaurant inspections
“All throughout kitchen prep area and ware washing” the “ceiling/ceiling tiles/vents were soiled with accumulated food debris, grease, dust, or mold-like substance.”
The air temperature in the main walk-in cooler measured 52 degrees, which is a problem when the cooler is supposed to keep food at or below 41 degrees.
So, Stop Sales for “food safety due to temperature abuse” came down on cooked wings, pork chops, cooked chicken, burger patties, marinated chicken, mortadella, brined wings, salmon portions, raw beef, provolone cheese, cooked vegetables, and pork belly.
All went into the garbage.
Bay 13 reopened Thursday after passing re-inspection.
