Write a Miami food poem, and this Wynwood bakery will give you a loaf of bread
Grocery prices are up, and so is the cost of dining out in Miami.
But if you’re creative, here’s a way to earn a loaf of bread. A very good one, at that.
For the third straight year, Zak the Baker in Wynwood is participating in O, Miami’s “Poems for Bread” trade. Starting Oct. 1, all you have to do is write a haiku about Miami and food.
Your prompt: What is Miami food? That means just about any food-and-Miami related subject is fair game, from who picks the avocados and celebrations of the different culinary cultures of Miami to why everyone in this town is willing to sell their literal souls and possibly their children for mangoes every summer.
The soil and the farms, the seasonings and the specialties, the seafood and the Cuban sandwiches: What inspires you? What makes you hungry? What feeds your creativity?
When inspiration hits, head to Zak’s and fill out one of the orange cards you’ll find at the counter. Note: you must write your haiku on this orange O, Miami-approved card to enter. Do not carve your poem into a coconut, even though that would be pretty cool.
Submit your poem and walk out with a loaf of your choice while supplies last (anything but the braided challah — that’s off limits).
You can let your imagination run wild, but trades are limited to one per day. You can submit your haikus at Zak’s at 295 NW 26th St. from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday-Friday, with the exceptions of Oct 2, 7, 8, 14 and 15, when the bakery will not be open.
On Nov. 14, O, Miami will announce two winners. One grand prize winner receives free bread for a year, while the runner up wins a native fruit tree.
The O, Miami team will be at Zak the Baker from 8-10 a.m. Oct. 1 to help you get started. You can also submit ideas for the 15th annual poetry festival, which runs throughout April 2026, at omiami.org.
