One of Kendall’s favorite barbecue spots is growing — in more ways than one.

Apocalypse BBQ, the popular restaurant from Jeff and Laura Budnechky, has announced it plans to open a second location, while its little sister, Lala’s Burgers, will also be opening its first brick-and-mortar restaurant.

Both new locations, of course, will be in Kendall; Budnechky, the founder of Day One Hospitality, is loyal to his community.

“Kendall has always shown up for us, and we’re proud to keep growing right here in the community that’s believed in what we’re building since day one,” he said.

The new Lala’s, known for its smashburgers, will open at the former Fujiya Japanese Restaurant at 13750 SW 88th St. in the next three to four months, a representative told the Herald. The restaurant has been popping up at Lincoln’s Beard Brewing Co. near Tropical Park since the end of 2024. There’s no word on whether it will remain open at the brewery after the new restaurant opens.

Budnechky said he wants to create an Apocalypse-type atmosphere at the new restaurant.

“This new Lala’s location is about more than just serving great food; it’s about creating another space where people can come together, connect and feel at home,” Budnechky said. “That’s always been the heart of what we do.”

There’s no opening date or new address for the second Apocalypse BBQ, though in an Instagram video, Budnechky said it was “a year or so” away from opening, calling the plan “a great opportunity.”

The Budnechkys created the Apocalypse BBQ concept in their backyard. The concept eventually became a pop-up in Wynwood and later opened at at Killian Greens Golf Club in Kendall at the end of 2022, drawing huge crowds willing to wait in long lines for brisket, ribs, pulled pork and more. The restaurant left the small golf course space to move into its own space at Kendall Village Center off Kendall Drive and the Turnpikeearlier this year.

Earlier this summer, Apocalypse began bottling and selling its sauces: the cafecito-infused Oro Negro; Carolina Mojo Mustard fans pair with brisket; and the OG Sauce, a smoky, sweet pairing for pulled pork. The sauces are available to buy at the restaurant.

The video announcement saved what may be the best news for last: the Budnechkys are expecting their first child in six months.
