When you think of the best sandwiches in Miami, you probably think of the big names, the ones you see splashed across social media. The Sandwicheries. The Sanguiches. Enriqueta’s or Jholano’s. All famous for good reason.

But according to Yelp, the best sandwich shop in Miami — and in the entire country, as it turns out — is a modest spot in an industrial park in Hialeah that has served its working neighbors for 26 years.

Yelp has just released its list of the Top 100 Sandwich Shops in America, and Franky’s Deli Warehouse was ranked no. 1 , the only Miami-area restaurant that made the list. Several Broward sandwich shops were on the list, too: Surfside Subs (16) and What’Sub (23) in Deerfield Beach and Louie K Subs/Club Sandwich (41) in Sunrise. Piknik in Palm Beach Gardens came in at no. 11.

Yelp created the list by identifying businesses in the sandwich category on the site, then ranking those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews.

Yelp users not only praised Franky’s for its reliable subs but also its attention to customer service, calling the small restaurant the sort of place where “everyone seems to know your name.”

“The mom-and-pop shop also logs a remarkable number of reviews for “mak[ing] people feel like they matter,” Yelp writes.

Nanette Diaz, who owns the sub shop with her husband Franky and called the tribute “a blessing,” said there’s a reason for that loyalty. No matter how busy the shop is or how swiftly the staff is moving diners in and out, everyone pays attention to making customers feel at home.

“Customer service is 100 percent important to us,” she said. “I worked for UPS customer service. My husband worked for Subway and used to teach franchise owners how to run the shops. I also ran a cleaning business after UPS, and he had an exterminating business. In all four things, customer service is important, I don’t care what the business is.”

And so, even if many diners are on a 30-minute lunch break, they’re still treated like they matter. A lot.

“We feed the working people,” Diaz explained. “A lot of them have half an hour for lunch, so we get ’em in and get ’em out. But it’s still old home week. They run into people they haven’t seen in awhile. Everybody’s smiling and happy.”

The customers are also fond of introducing new diners to Franky’s sandwiches. Earlier this week the owner of the nearby Millennium Martial Arts Academy brought in a group of 30, filling the entire restaurant.

“They get excited to bring in new people, and that excites us,” Diaz said.

The Diazes, who have been married for 46 years, considered opening a second location in Doral in 2020, but the pandemic prevented any expansion. For now, they’re happy to serve Hialeah the sandwiches it craves. The most popular order is the Italian, with ham, capicola, salami and provolone; insiders know to order it hot.

“It’s an extremely tasty sandwich, especially when heated,” Diaz said. “All the oils in the meat mesh together.”

Also popular are the Philly cheesesteak and the tuna sandwich, which caused one amazed Yelp poster to declare, “A tuna sub has no business tasting this good.”

The restaurant also serves soups, which are surprisingly popular even during the hot summer months. Wednesdays are New England clam chowders days; Friday is for lobster bisque. Both inevitably sell out.

“It’s 99 degrees out, but we sell soup like it’s ice cream,” Diaz said.
