One of the hottest restaurants from L.A. has just opened in Miami. Can you get in?
When it opened in Los Angeles in 2022, pasta maker Evan Funke’s restaurant Mother Wolf famously boasted an impressive waitlist of about 1,500 souls dying to get a reservation. Even two years later, getting a seat is tricky enough to inspire Resy to offer recommendations on how to get in.
Now, the restaurant, which also has a location at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas in 2023, has opened an opulent version of Mother Wolf in Miami’s chic Design District in a partnership with hospitality group Ten Five.
At the Mother Wolf restaurants, Funke — a two-time James Beard nominee also responsible for the restaurants Felix in Venice, California, and Tre Dita in Chicago — highlights Roman cooking.
The menu is built on his specialties: homemade pasta, crispy brick oven pizzas like a spicy Diavola and the classic Margherita, and Funke’s famous focaccia, which is allegedly so outstanding even carb-conscious L.A. celebrities probably wish they could try it.
But there are other possibilities as well: grilled Diver scallops, branzino roasted with fennel, steamed mussels in a broth, fried lamb chops and ribeye with wild arugula.
Dan Daley, managing partner of Ten Five, said that the team was thrilled to be opening in Miami, “the most vibrant and discerning city in the country at this moment.”
“I’m excited to be bringing the mosaic of culinary traditions of Rome to Miami, a city that is overflowing with culture and endless experiences,” he said.
You don’t get to be a magnet for the wealthy and famous without an atmosphere, and Mother Wolf’s Old World atmosphere is notable from the second you walk through the door.
Designed by London’s Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the restaurant blends Art Deco style and Italian design and ends up with something luxurious. You’ll spot Murano glass chandeliers and sconces, oak paneling, terrazzo floors and damask walls with details. The idea, kind of, is ancient Rome meets Miami, only with pizza.
Of course, you may care more about the wine list, which features more than 400 wines with an emphasis on Italy, or the cocktail program, which is inspired by Roman history with Italian aperitifs, twists on the Aperol Spritz and cocktails like the San Lorenzo (sage and black pepper gin primo) and Il Palantino (gin, cucumber and lemon).
As for the question of whether you can get in: Reservations for the restaurant’s first week are available but sparse (and may be non-existent by the time you read this). Remember your chances are probably better on days Tuesday or Wednesday than they are on Friday or Saturday.
