A neighborhood Thai and sushi restaurant in South Miami was just named one of the best mom-and-pop businesses in the country.

According to a new partnership from Yelp and Entrepreneur, a magazine and website that focuses on business and business management, Pla-Tu Sushi Thai Tapas is one of America’s favorite independently-owned businesses.

The restaurant, which opened in 2021 and serves Thai and sushi dishes, was named the best restaurant in Florida by Yelp earlier this year. It was praised by Entrepreneur for its attention to detail and friendly customer service.

“It’s not easy to stand out in Miami’s booming restaurant scene,” the story says, “but Pla-Tu is clearly doing it: Yelp users overwhelmingly rate their experience five-stars.”

Chef Manasanan Phorasamee, known to regulars as “Chef Oui,” said the business succeeds because the operators stay true to their values — and their customers. She co-owns the restaurant with family members and her partner, master sushi chef Pravech “Win” Fueng-ngern.

“Despite changing circumstances and increasing operating costs, we strive to maintain the affordability of our offerings,” she said via email. “Most importantly, we value quality of our products and services over anything. We always pay attention to any details, from hand-picking all our ingredients, to prioritizing feedback from our valued customers, to always improving and thriving for excellence overall.”

To come up with the list Yelp identified independently owned-and-operated businesses in several categories (shopping, nightlife, restaurants, food, arts and entertainment, fitness, beauty and spas, home and local services, and hotels and travel). Each was then ranked according to the total number and ratings of reviews and included only one business per state.

The only other South Florida spot mentioned in the food or restaurant categories was Let’s Chill Ice Cream on Sample Road in Coral Springs. Two Miami-Dade businesses were mentioned in other categories: Everglades River of Grass Adventures in the travel category and 5 Points TV Installation in Hialeah in the home and services category.

Yelp small business expert Emily Washcovick said the businesses on the list are important to their communities.

“Born out of passion and an entrepreneurial spirit, these businesses shape local communities now and into the future through their unique dishes and products, memorable service and one-of-a-kind experiences,” she said in a statement.
