Mold on food and ‘old mouse droppings’ at a Hialeah Sedano’s that failed inspection
Dead roaches, disgusting food and other problems lowlighted Friday’s failed inspection of a Sedano’s Supermarket in Hialeah, where the chain was founded.
The Florida Department of Agriculture inspects grocers of all levels and food processing, food storage and food distribution facilities. Unlike inspections of restaurants by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, a failed Ag Department inspection doesn’t automatically close the establishment. But inspectors can put Stop Use Orders on areas or equipment. Enough of those and the establishment owner might decide there’s no point in opening.
Inspector Simeon Carrero didn’t have to hit any parts of this Sedano’s, 1690 W. 68th St., with a Stop Use Order. But, here’s some of the violations Inspector Carrero did find.
▪ “Several gaps under exit doors” in the backroom area, which invites all manner of vermin from the outside.
▪ “Several small fruit flies” in the backroom produce processing area.
▪ Also in the backroom, “several dead roaches on glue boards not removed at frequency that prevents their accumulation.”
▪ In the food service and produce area, the cutting boards were “scored and scratched” to the point that they “can no longer be effectively cleaned and sanitized.”
▪ Out in the produce retail area, Inspector Carrero saw “several bags of raw potatoes with some kind of mold and spoil on a display table.” Basura.
▪ “Observed old dry mouse droppings, litter, debris and soil underneath food storage racks throughout establishment.”
