Tres Leches cinnamon rolls? With new shop, Night Owl Cookies creator reps Miami culture
These are not your parents’ cinnamon rolls.
By definition, cinnamon rolls are delicious, the perfect combination of dough, icing and (duh) cinnamon. But at Rolled, the new concept from Night Owl Cookie founder Andrew Gonzalez, only two of the 10 signature flavors even have cinnamon.
Think Tres Leches rolls. Guava y queso rolls. Cafecito rolls (made in partnership with Per’La Specialty Roasters coffee). There are rolls celebrating ham, cookies and cream and a bacon-and-scotch combination.
And of course, there’s a Night Owl roll, which has a cookie crumbled on top.
Gonzalez, who created the late-night destination Night Owl Cookies almost 10 years ago at age 20, said he wanted to create the opposite of a midnight sugar fix spot with Rolled, which is located next to Night Owl Cookies on Eighth Street in Miami, next to the Florida International University campus.
Rolled is a morning-and-afternoon spot, closing at 6 p.m. daily (by contrast, Night Owl Cookies stays open until 2 a.m.)
Gonzalez says that his rolls “represent the flavors of our community and generation.”
“Miami already has staple areas where you get cinnamon rolls,” he said. “However, they never adapted or evolved with the times.”
This is Gonzalez’ first foray outside the world of cookies. Night Owl Cookies also has locations in Wynwood, North Miami, the Design District and Pembroke Pines.
