La Ventanita podcast: Actress Jenny Lorenzo, aka, the internet’s most famous ‘abuela’

Jenny Lorenzo became “Miami famous” when the actor put on a gray wig, turned on her grandmother’s Cuban accent and became everyone’s Abuela in YouTube videos.

Viral fame ensued.

On the May 5 episode of La Ventanita, the Miami Herald food podcast, we interview Lorenzo, born in Kendall, a graduate of the University of Miami’s theater and arts program, who became an internet sensation. You’ve seen her hilarious skits, starring the opinionated gray-haired Abuela and a host of other characters, including your judgemental tía.

Her biggest hits: Who needs Amazon Alexa when you have Abuela? and What if the Golden Girls Were Latina? and What if Belle from Beauty and the Beast was from Miami?

Lorenzo’s also a Hollywood voice actor for cartoons. She co-hosts her own podcast, Hyphenated, on the challenges of being caught between two generations and cultures. And she co-hosts a show on the Disney+ official YouTube channel — because she’s a Disney super fan.

The characters she creates come from tapping into her Miami experience. She lovingly pokes fun at the inter-generational conflicts between Cuban immigrants and their Cuban-American progeny.

Tune in Thursdays at 11 a.m. to watch La Ventanita live on YouTube and the Miami Herald website. Find every episode of La Ventanita podcast at the show page and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Megaphone, Stitcher and MiamiHerald.com.
