This Miami radio show host says flan should be Florida’s official dessert. Abuela agrees

Enrique Santos wants to start a riot.

Like many South Floridians, the iHeartRadio personality was taken aback when Gov. Ron DeSantis made strawberry shortcake the state’s official dessert. DeSantis signed the bill on March 7 while consuming the fruit-filled treat, a crumbly biscuit layered with heaps of whipped cream and strawberries (obviously).

Why would he do such a thing? You can look to the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Danny Burgess. He represents areas that include Plant City, which hosts an annual strawberry festival and supplies 75 percent of the U.S. winter crop of strawberries.

While many could argue that Key Lime Pie would be the more obvious choice as our state’s dessert, Santos prefers something sweeter and way more 305: a nice plate of abuela’s flan.

The local personality posted a few Stories on Monday, petitioning his fans to spread the hashtag #TodosSomosFlan, meaning “We Are All Flan.”

His Instagram also featured a video of Esteban “Steve” Bovo, Mayor of Hialeah, a city where a KFC sold flan for over 40 years, who was equally perplexed by the proclamation.

“I’ve never eaten strawberry shortcake,” said Bovo. “I don’t know what it is.”

So are you all in? If so, post your favorite recipes with the #TodosSomosFlan and tag @enriquesantos while you’re at it. He may give you a shout-out on his show.
