Red Rooster Overtown still isn’t open, but now you can try some of its famous dishes

The long-awaited Red Rooster Overtown is not yet open, but soon Chef Marcus Samuelsson will be giving the people what they want: A first taste of his Red Rooster menu.

Famous for his popular Red Rooster Harlem, which opened in 2010, Samuelsson is opening The Creamery on June 19 (that’s Juneteenth, in case you forgot). The restaurant won’t feature a full Red Rooster menu, but it will highlight some of the delicacies Miami can expect.

So what can you fill up on at The Creamery? Chicken dishes like CK’s Chicken Waffles or Chips and Chicks (spicy Dorowat chicken chili with cheddar cheese sauce and plantain chips). Carb lovers can dive into Yep! Mac and Cheese with white cheddar, black pepper and scallions. There’s even Grains and Greens, with local greens, sour orange, green goddess, cauliflower and farro.

The ice cream is such stuff as dreams are made of, with eight different ice cream flavors, including Marcus’ Cornbread (honey butter caramel and blackberry jam); Ode to Havana (cream cheese ice cream, guava jam and Maria Biscuits) and the 7th Inning Stretch (Berber caramel corn, caramel, potato chips).

For these decadent flavors, Red Rooster partnered with Kendall’s Sweet Melody Ice Cream, which regularly serves its delicacies out of a popular ice cream ventanita.

The Creamery will be open for takeout and delivery or you can eat in the restaurant’s backyard, where there are 10 picnic tables set up for your social distancing-and-dining pleasure.

On June 20, The Creamery celebrates Juneteenth — the holiday that marks the end of slavery —with a party sponsored by black-owned rosé brand La Fête du Rosé. There will be a DJ, wine and bites.

Samuelsson, by the way, has already made his mark on Miami. In March, he lent his unopened restaurant to the staff of World Central Kitchen, Chef Andrés’ nonprofit organization that served more than 3 million meals in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and earned Andrés a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Andres’ staff and the Red Rooster chefs created packaged meals for workers laid off from Miami’s food and restaurant industry due to the coronavirus pandemic.
