Roaches on a rice cooker, ‘mold-like’ stuff on soda nozzles: restaurant inspection fails
No rodents on this week’s Sick and Shut Down List of South Florida restaurants that failed inspection.
But, there’s plenty of other things that creep, including mold.
What follows comes from Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation restaurant inspections. If you see a problem and want a place inspected, don’t email us. Go to the DBPR site and file a complaint. We don’t control who gets inspected or how strictly. We report without passion or prejudice, but with a side dish of humor.
In alphabetical order:
Blue Ginger Seafood Steakhouse, 14395 Miramar Pkwy., Miramar: For a place with “seafood” in the name, this joint seemed to have a lot of water problems.
Oh, they had the garden variety flying and crawling insect issues.
“Observed about six flies flying around in food prep area in the kitchen. “ The inspector noted “Food prep area is separate from cook line,” which makes us think the Blue Ginger’s got flies near where you get the food ready to cook and not where it’s actually cooked.
Of the 25 live roaches, three were “on a rice cooker (with white rice) on a prep table in the kitchen“ and another three promenaded on and under the prep table. The six dead roaches included one on the floor in dry storage, which was also where the inspector saw an open bag of rice sitting on the floor.
But, back to the water. They had problems with hot water...
“No hot water provided at handwash sink/three-compartment sink/mop sink when dishmachine is running.”
“Hot water not provided/shut off at employee handwash sink.”
No hot water at the mop sink, either.
...they had problems with very cold water...
“Stop Sale issued due to food not being in a wholesome, sound condition. Drink ice”
That probably wasn’t helped by “accumulation of black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine.”
...they had problems with water that was just standing.
“Standing water or very slow draining water in handwash sink...standing water in bottom of reach-in cooler at cook line.”
Then, there’s the effects of moisture. “Build-up of mold-like substance on nonfood-contact surface. On the walk-in cooler curtains and back door air curtains, and walk-in cooler ceiling.”
“Gaskets with slimy/mold-like build-up.”
Remember that open bag of rice on the floor? When the inspector came back Wednesday, there was a live roach “crawling on the exterior of the rice container in the dry storage room.” The manager killed it and sanitized the rice container, but maybe folks should consider fries instead of rice with their surf or turf .
Blue Ginger got back open after Wednesday’s second re-inspection.
Miami Grill, 1505 S. Federal Hwy., Dania Beach: Here, there be mold.
A “mold-like substance” decorated nozzles at a lemonade dispenser, a “Coke freestyle machine” and the drive-thru.
“Accumulation of black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine.”
Now, to the eight live roaches, four of which were by the cookline, 25 dead roaches on the floor of the food prep area in the kitchen, by the handwash sinks and the drive-thru and 10 dead roaches on the floor under the dining room bench seating.
Guess they figured, nobody there eating, what the heck?
“Clean utensils or equipment stored in dirty drawer or rack. Clean utensils stored in a soiled box pan in front of three-compartment sink.”
Missing floor tiles, metal flooring that wasn’t tight to the floor...wonder what life forms are growing under there.
Miami Grill was cooking again after passing Friday re-inspection.
The Mughal, 2100 N. University Dr., Pembroke Pines: Handwashing problems proliferating here.
“Handwash sink removed from food preparation/dishwashing area.”
“No handwash sink for employees. Current hand wash sink not working. Not in use due to waste water back up.”
Ah, yes, the wastewater backup.
“Sewage/wastewater backing up through floor drains. Hand sink in kitchen backing up during use through floor drain. Observed employee step in water. Drain is not in an isolated area. Drain is in middle of the kitchen.”
That handwashing sink, as well as the sinks in the men’s and women’s restrooms, lacked any way to dry your hands.
Yellow-stained cutting boards and black debris on the dishwashing area walls.
“Food-contact surfaces not sanitized after cleaning, before use...Employee cleaning dishes in triple sink. Employee not sanitizing dishes after washing.”
The handwash sink, the walk-in cooler shelves and the reach-in cooler shelves and interior were “soiled with food residue.”
There were four dead roaches, one next to the front counter.
“Bus tub full of seasoning stored on floor in dry storage.” Better hope the little roach undertakers don’t stop by the seasoning on the way back from getting the corpses.
