Leave your raisin potato salad at home. This ‘cookout’ in Overtown is free

You are officially invited to the cookout.

Several of the best-known black chefs from Miami-Dade and Broward counties will bring the dishes that made them South Florida famous to The Cookout in Overtown on Feb. 29 as part of Black History Month. And the event is free.

The event, dubbed a “friendly battle” to see whose cuisine reigns supreme, is an opportunity to taste some of South Florida’s wide and varied Caribbean and soul food flavors.

Among them is chef Frances Jones, called the “Conch Queen of Miami,” will be making her conch fritters. Opa-locka’s Crab Man 305 will be making his garlic crab. Others include Lloydel Taylor and the well-known barbecue expert Souseman Larry.

Findler Charles will be making griot gyros and vegan chef Kriss Kofi will be making his fritters and mushroom-based dishes. There will be music and games of dominoes and spades.
