Would you sleep overnight on a Wynwood sidewalk for beer? Hundreds are about to
You could be forgiven for thinking every day in Miami is madness. But you only find people crazy enough to sleep overnight on Wynwood sidewalks one day a year.
That’s the true definition of Miami Madness. And it’s all for beer.
Lines will form literally around the block outside J. Wakefield Brewing in Wynwood the night before the annual Sept. 29 release of the sour ale Miami Madness. Yes, that’s a beer — a tart, refreshing beer called a berliner weisse that screams Miami.
And yes, that’s a cartoon of a Miami zombie on the label … because madness.
Just look at this line from another one of their releases, the Dragon Fruit Passion Fruit berliner weisse.
Miami Madness is made with locally harvested guava, mango and passion fruit to give it a tropical background flavor. The flavors are so specific to Florida that J. Wakefield — Wynwood’s only completely independent craft beer brewery — was the first to coin the phrase to describe it as Florida Weisse.
And people do love it. It was rated highly by two respected publications, No. 1 Beer Advocate and No. 2 by RateBeer.
The 750 ml bottles will be limited to three per person and cost $20 — cash only. J. Wakefield will also sell six other of its annual releases. Miami Madness will also be found on tap at the brewery and local craft beer bars in coming weeks.
