The List: South Florida's best eats with Kuro's Alex Becker
Chef Alex Q. Becker has traveled extensively in his career, cooking in Michelin-starred kitchens in Italy, as well as for high-end Japanese restaurant brands Nobu and Katsuya. Now at home in South Florida, the executive chef of the new Kuro at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood shares his favorite local spots to grab a bite:
1. Pubbelly
Octopus a la Plancha. Sitting at the bar and watching the kitchen action close up gives me a comforting feeling.
1418 20th St., Miami Beach; 305-532-7555.
2. La Sandwicherie
Relaxing outside with a massive, delicious sandwich is ideal.
229 14th St., Miami Beach; 305-532-8934.
3. Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink
Heirloom Tomato Salad and Roasted Fish. That’s what it’s all about.
130 NE 40th St., Miami; 305-573-5550.
4. Macchialina
Fresh Pasta has a large place in my heart. Plus, the hospitality of Jen Chaefsky and Mike Pirolo is a win.
820 Alton Rd., Miami Beach; 305-534-2124.
5. Hot and Soul
New Orleans-Style Shrimp. This is my neighborhood gem.
3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale; 754-206-2155
6. Cafe Seville
Paella. Old-school Spanish tapas spot with a very chill vibe.
2768 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale; 954-565-1148.
7. Bar-B-Q Jack’s
Brisket Plate. I’m from the South, so occasionally I just need barbecue.
500 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park; 954-567-9595.
8. Basilic Vietnamese Grill
Pho.
218 Commercial Blvd., Fort Lauderdale; 954-771-5798.
9. Zak the Baker
Beet Toast. I love great bread, so this is a regular stop for me.
405 NW 26th St., Miami; 786-347-7100.
10. Gabose
Bulgogi or Bibimbop. Living in L.A. made Korean food a staple of my diet; Gabose helps me feed the need.
4991 N. University Dr., Lauderhill; 954-572-4800.
