The List: Miami's best foods with The Local's Phil Bryant
Executive chef Phil Bryant has just overhauled the menu of the four-year-old The Local Craft Food & Drink at 150 Giralda Ave. in Coral Gables. Here’s where he likes to eat when he’s off the clock (you may notice not one but two veal-cheek appearances):
1. Su Shin Izakaya
Ramen Tonkatsu and Monkfish Liver. If you get lucky, they’ll have these tiny little shrimp that they fry. You eat them whole, shell and all, and they are superb.
159 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables; 305-445-2584.
2. Barley
Veal Cheek Vaca Frita. Killer!
9059 SW 73rd Ct., Miami; 305-397-8678.
3. Islas Canarias
Ham Croquettes.
13695 SW 26th St., Miami; 305-559-6666.
4. Best Sub & Sandwich Shop
Hot Corned Beef and Pastrami with Grilled Onions.
9802 SW 77th Ave., Miami; 305-279-0000.
5. Daily Bread Marketplace
It’s all about the Lamb Gyro.
2400 SW 27th St., Coconut Grove; 305-856-0363.
6. Sarussi Subs
The Original 18-Inch. A Miami Staple.
6797 SW Eighth St., Miami; 305-264-5464.
7. Sugarcane Raw Bar and Grill
Bone Marrow with Veal Cheek Marmalade. And I always recommend anything from the robata grill.
3252 NE First Ave., Miami; 786-369-0353.
8. Black Point Ocean Grill
Crunchy Grouper Sandwich. Crispiest piece of fish I’ve had in a long time.
24775 SW 87th Ave., Homestead; 305-258-3918.
9. Palacio de los Jugos
Watermelon Juice and bags and bags of Pork Rinds.
Multiple Locations.
10. The Cypress Room
I’m into the whole experience: the food, the plateware, and the service, the service, the service.
3620 NE Second Ave., Miami; 305-520-5197.
