Chef Joshua Wahler oversees the stoves at Estiatorio Milos, South Beach’s fine-dining ode to Greek food. He says his off-the-clock favorites in South Florida all bring him back to growing up in New Jersey:
1. South Garden Chinese Restaurant
It’s all about the Dim Sum. Pork Buns, Sticky Rice, Dumplings, Shumi, Gai Lan, & Egg Rolls. These are a few of my favorite things. Go on the weekends for full cart service.
10855 SW 72nd St., Miami; 305-274-9099.
2. Toasted Bagelry & Deli
Whitefish Spread, Cream Cheese & Tomato on Everything Bagel (toasted, of course). Or, Taylor Ham, Bacon, Egg & Cheese on a Sub Roll. It works for any meal.
83 SW Eighth St., Miami; 305-400-6996.
Smoked Salmon, Fried Chicken, The Burger. Perhaps the most consistent restaurant in town. I’ve never had a bad meal here.
201 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables; 305-529-0141.
Spaghetti with Tomato and Basil. Soup to nuts one of the best meals I’ve had in years, good food done very well.
4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach; 305-674-4660.
5. La Perla Peruvian Restaurant
Ceviche Mixto, Whole Roasted Chicken. A hidden gem of a Peruvian restaurant.
13742 SW 152nd St., Miami; 786-293-7101.
Boars Head Ultimate Sub. Growing up with 15 Italian delis in my town, sandwiches hold a special place in my heart. The Ultimate with Pepperjack Cheese, Spicy Mustard, Mayo, Pickles, Jalapeños, Lettuce, Tomato, Salt, Pepper & Oregano.
7. Pizza Johny’s
Dozens of pizza joints claim to be from New York, but these guys get it right. While the pizza is awesome (Plain or my house favorite Crispy Crust Cheese Pizza with Bacon, Fresh Tomato & Basil), the Meat Knots are the best.
9529 SW 72nd St., Kendall; 305-364-5574.
8. Pita Bites
Foul Madamas, Chicken Kebabs. I’m ready for these big and bold flavors anytime of the day.
94 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables; 305-639-8998.
9. Sushi Ko
Hamachi Tiradito, Gyoza, Spicy Octopus, Sashimi. The sushi joint where everyone knows your name and your favorite bites.
7971 SW 40th St., Miami; 305-264-6778.
10. The Lokal
Marinated Grilled Mushrooms, Cracker Cowboy Chicken Sandwich. Much, much more than the best burger in town.
3190 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove; 305-442-3377.
