Stylish, delicious Japanese is here for you, Broward
If you love Zuma, you’re going to love Etaru.
Rainer Becker, co-founder and creator of Zuma restaurants worldwide and Roka London, collaborated with Roka London Group Executive Chef Hamish Brown to create Etaru. Head chef Sergio Rivera (Nobu, Makoto) heads up the kitchen.
The Space
The former Hyde Kitchen and Bar space has been revamped to include a robata grill and is outfitted in pale Brazilian Ipe wood and floor-to-ceiling windows framing ocean views. Despite the minimalism the room is full of energy. There’s a bustling sushi counter behind which a team of chefs churn out maki and man the robata grill, while a phalanx of servers circles the room.
What you're having

A bunch of small plates (most hover in the $12-$16 range; larger mains are $19-$40).
Sushi and sashimi lead the menu along with hot Japanese dishes and plenty of robata. Start off with Roka London’s signature yellowtail sashimi with yuzu truffle dressing or the tuna tartare made with oscietra caviar. Then move on to grilled seafood from the robata, such as charcoal-grilled scallop skewers, snapper, salmon teriyaki, black cod marinated in yuzu miso and grilled tiger prawns. There are also meat dishes from the grill, from spicy tobanjan-glazed baby back ribs to lamb cutlets with Korean spices.

A veggie maki roll made with avocado is given heat with a dusting of crushed wasabi peas, while a softshell crab, cucumber, kimchi roll is accompanied by chili mayonnaise.

If you’ve been to Zuma you’ll be familiar with the dessert platters here, ornate sculptural installations nested in ice bowls that can include a smoked coconut and passionfruit parfait, lemon and key lime iced popsicles and guava mousse with grilled papaya, mango biscuit and passion fruit sorbet.
You'll come here with
A date or a group of friends. The place works on many levels. Even kids are well taken care of by the fastidious staff. Either way, you’ll want to get a table on the outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean, which is breezy enough on hot nights and feels like dining on a luxury cruise ship.
Pro-tip
A convenient location in Hallandale Beach means ample parking if you get there before 7 p.m. Otherwise it’s valet-only.
Bottom line
This Zuma-like restaurant means that Broward foodies no longer have to trek downtown for their robotayaki fix.
