What started as a love of upscale grilled-cheese sandwiches for the owner couple Brian and Fatima Mullins, and co-owner Christian Dickens, has become a bona fide brick-and-mortar Miami chain. The couple started the sky-blue food truck in 2010, opened a location in the MiMo District in February of 2015 and signed the lease for the location at at 1915 Ponce de Leon Boulevard just five weeks ago.
That hasn’t stopped them from being fully operational, complete with their trademark sexy neon sign — inside, of course: This is the Gables.
Plus, they arrive with a new twist: They will be offering a host of indulgent milkshakes, such as a city-apropos Pastelito Shake, made with vanilla and guava sauce, garnished with a pastelito; and the Midnight snack, which is topped with chocolate-dipped pretzels and potato chips.
“It’s morphed into this thing that has a life of its own,” said Brian Mullins, a nine-year Gables resident who lives just four blocks from the new store.
