Two NBA champions — Udonis Haslem and Dwyane Wade— have partnered with chef Anthony Carron to open 800 Degrees Woodfired Kitchen in Aventura. This is the first Florida outpost of the Woodfired chain, which includes locations in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Dubai.

The basketball stars recently announced the launch of Forty-Three, a joint company named after their respective jersey numbers that will focus on shared business ventures like this restaurant.

The space

The new 800 Degrees is in a cavernous new space adjacent to the Aventura mall. Touches like exposed ducts and exposed concrete don’t do much to buffer sound, but high top tables and cushy booths create a cozy and sophisticated feel. A large bar is festooned with giant flatscreen TVs, and the open kitchen is visible from all seats in the house.

Be prepared to eat

Made-from-scratch pizzas, roasted veggies and meats and salads. The kitchen utilizes specially designed wood-fire stone hearth pizza ovens and wood-fire rotisseries that imbue the dishes with a subtle smokiness.

Prices are reasonable with starters $9-$20, pizzas $14-$23 and mains $22-$45.

Pizzas are big enough for two or three and come with a pliable, chewy-yet-charred crust. Toppings run the gamut from smoked salmon, vodka sauce, Iberico ham, clams and rotisserie chicken.

Vegetarians will have plenty of options with the whole roasted cauliflower nestled in a pool of golden beet tahini and an artichoke that’s roasted whole and served with lemon butter and pecorino cheese. There’s also a vegan-friendly pizza made with “soyrizo,” (call it vegan chorizo), avocado and corn.

Wade and Haslem’s influence on the menu manifests in the baked-not-fried UD’s Woodfired wings, made with a base of semi-spicy Calabrian chilies and served with creamy Gorgonzola dip. Wade’s Burger is topped with pastrami, truffle cheese, roasted garlic aioli, and red oak lettuce.

Desserts will appeal to dough fiends with a Nutella calzone, stuffed with hazelnuts and strawberries, a decadent bread pudding and a key lime pie.

Bottom line

You won’t find Wade or Haslem behind the line making pizzas, but you might find them tucking into a burger or pizza at the bar.
