The team behind Ball & Chain has just added another property to their Little Havana collection, recently acquiring the ownership of Calle Ocho Mexican mainstay, Taquerias el Mexicano at 521 SW 8th St. While it is retro (circa 1985 retro), and, like Ball & Chain will remain so, the restaurant will have a few modern twists.
“We want to keep the venue as authentic as possible,” says co-owner Zack Bush. “Several key employees that have been an integral part of the restaurant for 15 to 20 years have played a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of this landmark establishment. We are proud and honored to carry the Taquerias torch on Calle Ocho.”

Fans of Taquerias’ handmade tortillas, signature mole and traditional Mexican fare from tacos and tortas to burritos and fajitas, will be happy to taste that not much has changed, but a few things will be different.
Opening in late October is Los Altos Dulceria, the restaurant’s second-floor Mexican novelty store and candy shop selling all sorts of sweets, including signature Taquerias el Mexicano-branded candy, and even costumes.
When new owners Zack and Ben Bush and Bill Fuller traveled to Mexico several times to ensure the authenticity of the food and cocktails, they met renowned Mexican bartender Erick Gaytan, who consulted on and modified the booze menu to reflect his passion for mezcal and tropical cocktails. Among the features on the cocktail menu: La Famosa Frozen Horchata, a recipe that is secret. The classics are also there and you can try them all during their daily happy hour from 3-7 p.m. featuring two for one margaritas and beers.
