This new downtown lounge sounds so swanky we will forgive its weird name

Downtown Miami has a swanky new watering hole called Socialista Miami.

The “Caribbean-inspired playground” is the brainchild of Maggio Cipriani of those Ciprianis -- the family who created the legendary Venice landmark restaurant in 1931. His first Socialista opened in New York back in 2016, followed by locations in Dubai and London. This location is directly below Cipriani’s downtown restaurant. Since this bar/lounge concept is a franchise, Miami will probably just have to give them a pass on the name Socialista.

The Miami version pays homage to pre-Castro Cuba with 4,100 square feet of lounging space dolled up by designer Carlos Almada, who drew on a mix of Colonial influences combined with Chinese accents and 20th century modernism. There are antiques, rattan furniture, peacock greens and Art Deco blues. But it’s not your abuelita’s apartment. Far from it. And if it is like her’s, we want her address.

Socialista is heavy on rum and Caribbean-inspired dishes with hand-rolled cigars, live talent and resident DJs “drawing on the strong Cuban influence that Miami is known for,” they say. Worlds away from Venice, this latest Cipriani production joins boutique hotel Mr. C Coconut Grove and downtown’s Cipriani Miami.

“Socialista is a fun playground and warm and colorful environment for some relaxed time, with good music, great drinks and a joyful attitude,” Cipriani told Miami.com.
