12th Planet
If you love that crushing bass, the kind that rumbles out of the speakers and rearranges your insides, this show is for you. Renowned dubstep producers Skrillex and 12th Planet step behind the decks Saturday night at the Fillmore Miami Beach for a high-energy sonic blast that blows away typical house-music DJs. 12th Planet (real name John Dadzie) talked to Miami.com about the show and working with rap-rock group Korn on its new electronic album.
Q: You switched from drum ‘n’ bass to dubstep several years ago – why?
A: I felt dubstep was just the next progression of DNB when I first heard it. At the time, I was producing DNB for about six or seven years straight, and I think I just needed a change.
Q: How would you describe the way your music sounds, beyond the word “dubstep”?
A. I think my music sounds like sophisticated, booty-shaking, punk-rock mayhem.
Q: What kind of feeling would you like listeners to experience?
A: I would like my listeners to just lose themselves in the moment, and just have a great time when I’m playing.
Q: How did you hook up with Korn, and how did that go?
A: Korn asked Flinch and me if we wanted to do a collaboration on a project with them. We had no idea that it would be for an album, or that the album would even gain national acclaim. The project was so much fun to work on, and [singer] “J Devil” Jonathan Davis and I are gonna be working on more projects in the near future.
Q: What can we expect from your show with Skrillex at the Fillmore?
A: You can expect a hell of a lot of raw energy at the show in Miami. Our tour is about having a good time, but it’s also about changing people’s lives through music. Lose all those negative vibes at the door, because once you step into the arena, it’s nothing but madness.
Q: This is the final date of your tour – what’s next for you?
A: This is the final date of Mothership USA 1.0, but who knows what’s in store for next year’s Mothership 2.0? What’s next for me, though, is my 2012 world tour that goes through Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada and Europe. It’s called “The End is Near Tour” and it will start with an EP that comes out in January of next year titled “The End is Near.”
Q: You’ve performed at Winter Music Conference – how was that experience for you, and what do you think of Miami?
A: Each WMC/Ultra Week is different for me. I’ve been going to WMC/Ultra since 2003 and I’ve seen so many changes. I think it’s special that people still get to experience the Miami life with all their friends during that week. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, and I will be there every single year till the end of my career. I love Miami – it’s got a special place in my heart. DJ Craze is and has been one of my biggest supporters since I was a youth, and he brought me to play in Miami my first time in 2004, and I have loved coming back every time since.
