The story: While it may feel summery in Miami this week, the rest of the country is dealing with low temperatures and snow. As goes the story of most winters in the tropics. Miami-based mixologist and cocktail consultant Cricket Nelson, a transplant from frigid New England, was inspired by her family’s fresh cranberry pie (a secret recipe!) and hot mulled drinks warming on the back of their wood stove. She used the flavors of winter at home to recreate the vibe without the heat at Miami Beach’s newest cocktail haven Wunderbar at the Circa 39 Hotel where Christian Drouin Coeur de Lion Calavados apple brandy from Normandy is mixed with fresh lemon, house-made cranberry-infused orange blossom honey, and shaken with ice. To give the twist on the classic its signature Sidecar touch, Nelson coats the rim with her spiced sugar, featuring sugarcane juice, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg.
