WMC Up Close: Sharam Tayebi
" alt="<font face="Arial" size="2">Sharam Tayebi.<br /></font>" />
Sharam Tayebi, half of the Grammy-winning DJ duo Deep Dish, is well-known for blending lush vocals and filthy progressive-house beats. He performs Wednesday, March 25 at Cameo and Saturday, March 28 at Space in support of his new artist album “Get Wild”, featuring contributions from a diverse group including Tommy Lee, Daniel Bedingfield and Diddy.
Your new album is somewhat of a departure from Deep Dish. What were you going for?
It actually isn’t – it’s right smack into where I left things off with that, which is a combination of bringing the underground and the records with crossover appeal under one roof. Which is something we always try to do.
What about the hip-hop and country influences?
Fundamentally, it’s not a departure, but there are influences that personally I want to incorporate into this.
Do you think the worlds of dance music, rock and hip-hop are colliding more and more every year?
Well, I’m helping it by putting country in the middle of it…
What did Tommy Lee contribute to the instrumental track Sweat?
Piano – he did the piano line. A lot of people know him as a drummer, but nobody knows that he’s an amazing pianist and an amazing musician all-around.
Are there any other events you’re excited to see other than the nights you’re performing?
Yeah, I’ll go through the rounds and get to as many parties as I can – that’s the only chance I get to listen to other DJs play, other than if I have a night off in Ibiza or something. So I’m really looking forward to it – it’s a medium to promote the new material and also get inspired by all these other DJs.
What is your best memory from past WMCs?
It’s always hazy – you don’t remember much. But one thing that’s constant every year is post-conference sickness. Everybody I talk to, they get really sick, and everybody pays for it, so that’s something I’m watching out for this year.
Why don’t you guys ever play Ultra?
When they give us the proper invitation, we’ll consider it.
