Drake facing backlash over new song. His apology tour is hitting Miami
Drake wants to make things right.
The rapper, known for his generous deeds (he gave away thousands to underserved Miami folks back in 2018) is reaching out to all women who have the same name as the title of his newly dropped song.
Drake obviously realizes that the NSFW track “Janice STFU,” off his new album “Iceman,” isn’t exactly a romantic ballad. There’s been backlash since the drop, including plenty of memes.
So that’s why the music superstar is hosting an invite-only event at Forte dei Marmi in SoFi Sunday, to make sure you know there are no hard feelings.
The five-time Grammy winner, 39, is also hosting simultaneous gatherings or the Janices of his native Toronto, as well as New York, Houston and Los Angeles. A representative told the Miami Herald the hip-hopper hasn’t divulged which venue he’ll physically show up to yet; that’s a surprise.
Whether the “Take Care” singer is there or not, attendees are guaranteed a “one of a kind” bonding experience with people who share your name, the rep adds.
Physical invitations have reportedly been mailed out to a ton of ladies, whose legal first name must be Janice on their birth certificates, passports or driver’s licenses.
So who is the subject matter, exactly? According to record-keeping site NameCensus.com, the name Janice (English origin, meaning “God is gracious”) is not that common. There are only about 234,000 Americans walking around with Janice as their moniker. We can only think of one celebrity off the top of our heads — original supermodel Janice Dickinson — as well as two major TV characters, Chandler’s love interest on “Friends” and Tony’s sister on “The Sopranos.”
The average person named Janice today is around age 69, the site adds; the single highest number of births being 1951, with 15,982 babies.
The burning question remains: What is Drake’s beef with Janice, and why does he want her to STFU?
Analysts over at gossip website Just Jared speculate that like “Karen,” Janice is not a real person but a metaphor for his critics and “endless online commentary.”
If your invite got lost in the mail, you can still RSVP to the party, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Forte dei Marmei, 150 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach, by emailing JSTFU@DRAKERELATED.COM. Government-issued ID is required for all entry.
