‘Proud’ Scotland fan Gerard Butler in stands during World Cup loss
He may not have been traveling in the flesh with the Tartan Army, but Gerard Butler was with the boisterous crew in spirit.
The ardent soccer fan, 56, had just been in Foxborough, Massachusetts, for his country’s first World Cup match in 28 years.
Before the trip to Boston Stadium, the “300” star told BBC Radio he predicted Scotland would take Haiti 2-0 on June 13, just missing by a goal.
“I’m confident,” Butler said. “I’m really proud of the team we have right now,” adding that they should “just go out and play like the lions you are, play with your hearts and have fun.”
Alas, the actor did not foresee his countrymen losing to Morocco 1-0 on June 19, but took the L in stride. On Wednesday night, the Hollywood hunk was seen watching the action vs. Brazil at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Though not active on social media (thanks to being hacked numerous times), Butler was pictured on the Jumbotron in the VIP section with his interior designer girlfriend Morgan Brown. Both are wearing navy blue Scotland jerseys amid a sea of Brazil canary yellow.
At almost the 59-minute mark, when Brazil was up 2-0, the camera pans to Butler looking glum and sipping his drink; Brown, expressionless, has her head resting in her hand. One more goal and the game was over.
Though Scotland is not totally out, the country’s qualification to the knockout stages is in jeopardy after finishing third in their group. The guys must wait and see if third-place teams in other groups have a worse goal differential to advance.
Butler is keeping his mind on other things, busily promoting his new Netflix movie “The Hand of Dante.” The erstwhile action hero plays a hitman helping a writer (Miami’s Oscar Isaacs) steal the original manuscript of 14th century poet Dante’s “Divine Comedy.” Butler is already getting high marks for the performance, which The Guardian called “a jaw dropper.”
