Local 10 legend Kristi Krueger is leaving the anchor desk. So, what’s next?
Times, they are a changing for Kristi Krueger. But this is not the end.
The longtime WPLG-TV Local 10 anchor is turning a corner — professionally and personally.
Last week, Krueger’s colleague Jeff Weinsier posted on Facebook revealing she would be stepping away from anchoring this fall after 33 years.
“For those of us who have been around here a while, it’s hard to imagine Local 10 without Kristi Krueger sitting at that desk,” Weinsier wrote. “She has been our matriarch, our den mother, and one of the biggest reasons viewers trust this station the way they do.”
In the comment sections, congrats poured in from friends, fans and co-workers from the past and present. More than a few called the Fresno, California, native the “GOAT.” We also spotted such on-the-mark superlatives as “icon,” “pro” and “queen.”
“I’ve been spoiled getting to sit next to her for almost a decade,” shared regular co-anchor Jenise Fernandez. “No one does it better.”
Louis Aguirre, another famous deskmate, seconded the emotion: “The very best of the best.”
“The standard,” agreed reporter Janice Stanwood.
Fellow Local 10 legend Dwight Lauderdale had to pipe in about his former TV wife: “I will always cherish the dinners between newscasts, the laughs, and that front row seat at night watching Kristi balance career and her family by phone.”
About that balancing act. Krueger’s new schedule will be a lot more forgiving for a busy grandmother of three who currently co-anchors the noon, 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. newscasts. The timing really couldn’t be more perfect.
Reached by phone Monday, Krueger and her PR exec husband, Todd Templin, were flying home from Houston after attending their 3-month-old granddaughter Brooklyn’s baptism.
Son Troy, his wife Melissa, Brooklyn and big sister Palmer, 2, won’t be a plane ride away for much longer; the family of four will soon be moving back to South Florida for his biotech job in Fort Lauderdale.
The Krueger-Templin household will be Cousin Central. The Pembroke Pines couple’s daughter Kelsie, an event planner who lives nearby with her husband, Reny, just had a baby too — a boy, Caleb — in April. Maternity leave ends in September, and that’s when grandma will take on babysitting duties three days a week.
“I’m going to miss anchoring and the connection with viewers, but it’ll be nice to have the flexibility,” Krueger told the Miami Herald.
Then, adding with a laugh: “I’ve been a slave to the clock for 40 years. I couldn’t even be 15 seconds late to my job. Ever!”
The other two days, the three-time Emmy winner will pivot her focus to medical stories on her popular “Healthcast” segments, a natural progression.
“My mother was a nurse, my grandmother was a nurse,” explained the UF grad and proud Gator. “This move will be a great way to spend the final years of my career: Doing good for the community by producing educational, inspirational and enlightening stories. I think this is a no-brainer and the best of both worlds.”
Krueger was overwhelmed by the outpouring of well wishes once word got out.
“It’s been lovely to hear from everyone,” she said. “I joke that I’ve had a lot of TV wives and husbands. I got around! And I’m still with my first co-anchor [from WWSB Sarasota], my actual husband, Todd.”
Krueger couldn’t be more pleased about her trajectory, and gives a hat tip to the late Ann Bishop, among the first female journalists to anchor the evening news in a major market.
“I had the honor to work with her for a short time and learn from her. I’ve also been able to mentor the next generation so they have a seat at the table, so I hope that’s my legacy,” Krueger said. “Overall, I’m just eternally grateful that people allowed me into their living rooms for so long.”
Local 10 News Director Bill Pohovey, in a letter to staff, said he was pleased that the beloved OG would stay on board, albeit in a different capacity.
“I want to thank Kristi for the extraordinary service these past three decades, and we look forward to her contributions in this new chapter,” he wrote. “Our viewers shared in the birth of her two children, and now the birth of three grandchildren. And those grandchildren are now leading Kristi into a new phase in her career.”
