Caitlin Clark has her say about women in sports — and behind wheel — in Miami

Ladies of South Florida (with a valid driver’s license), Uber wants you.

The rideshare company recently rolled out a campaign called Gamechangers to lure more female drivers into the business. Despite decent pay (about $20 an hour), only one in five is a woman, and the San Franciso-based company wants that number to rise.

“There’s never been a better time for women to try driving, earn on their own terms, and feel confident doing it,” said Brooke Anderson, Uber’s head of product communications.

To sweeten the pot and have employees feel safer (and maybe even make connections), the app now has a rider-preferences feature to request a female driver. .

Basketball star Caitlin Clark is helping to lead the charge. The Indiana Fever player, 24, was at Paradise Plaza in Miami’s Design District Tuesday to discuss the initiative in a moderated Q&A with Anderson.

“You want to be comfortable with the people you’re surrounding yourself with, and people you can trust to get you from Point A to Point B,” said the 24-year-old Iowan dressed in a smart white pantsuit.

As for female leaders and mentors the WNBA standout has looked up to throughout her career? Clark admitted she gets that question all the time, and the answer was unexpected.

“You’d think it’s an adult figure or somebody that kind of had a position of authority over you,” she said. “But honestly for me ... it was the teammates or the captains I had in high school and even college.”

Any thoughts on the future of women in pro sports?

“A lot of people never thought that it could get to this moment that we’re in, but I truly think this is just the beginning,” Clark said. “I don’t think it’s just women’s sports. I think it’s the way women are valued across the world and what we can bring to the table. I’m really excited to see where things go.”
