ARod’s ex-wife breaks silence on their divorce in HBO doc
There’s a lot of ground to cover in HBO’s Alex Rodriguez documentary, “Alex vs. ARod.”
The 200-minute, three-parter incudes snapshots of the life of the Miami-raised baseball prodigy who attended Christopher Columbus High School and later, Westminster Christian.
The film also includes the not so pretty parts of the baller’s legacy such as a highly publicized steroid scandal and alleged infidelities.
In the second episode — which begins streaming 9 p.m. Thursday — Rodriguez’s ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis addressed the proverbial straw that broke up the marriage.
About five years after their 2002 wedding, Rodriguez was caught by paparazzi leaving a Toronto strip club with a blonde woman who was most definitely not his wife.
“He seemed to be extremely apologetic and not proud of his actions,” says Scurtis, 52. She met the former NY Yankee in the mid ‘90s at Body & Soul gym in Coral Gables.
The parents of two daughters survived the fallout, but the following year, in July 2008, Scurtis says there was a “very similar scenario.” That was around the time Rodriguez was rumored to stepping out with Madonna, who was then married to director Guy Ritchie.
Scurtis, who is now remarried with a daughter to real estate pro Angel Nicolas, does not name names, but, she admits: “At that point, we got divorced.”
In her petition, the former teacher famously wrote that the marriage was “irretrievably broken because of the husband’s extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct.”
“I knew that he had his own demons and I was hoping he would get help,” Scurtis continues in the doc. “I was hoping that it could end differently than it did.”
Though the breakup “affected” her, she “felt a sense of freedom” when it was all over.
Rodriguez does not admit to any extramarital entanglements — just flaws.
“In hindsight, I could have been a better husband. I could have been more present,” the 50-year-old allows. “I could have been more loyal. I could have been more sympathetic, empathetic, all of it. You name it.”
