No injuries after fire at Erik Spoelstra’s home; ex-wife and kids live nearby
A shocking two-alarm fire broke out early Thursday morning at the home of Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.
Thankfully, Spoelstra was not home at the time and no injuries were reported. The 55-year-old Illinois native was just flying back from Denver, Colorado, for a game against the Nuggets. The team’s charter flight reportedly arrived at 5:11 a.m.; Miami-Dade Fire Rescue received a call around 4:30 a.m. about the inferno.
More than 20 units were dispatched and “found fire that was as tall as the trees,” according to MDFR battalion chief Victoria Byrd. It took firefighters eight hours to extinguish the blaze, leaving the property around 12:40 p.m.
Spoelstra bought the five-bedroom home in December 2023, a month after his divorce from ex Heat cheerleader and mother of his three kids Nikki Sapp was finalized. That same year, he sold the historic Coconut Grove mansion that the couple bought in 2016 for $2.6 million, the year they married.
Property records show that the 5,772-square-foot home features five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a pool and a basketball court. It’s located south of Sunset Drive close to the entrance of Cocoplum. It is unclear if the single-family residence just west of Old Cutler Road can be salvaged.
The Miami Herald reached out to Sapp, 38, Thursday morning. Neither she nor her rep immediately got back to us for comment by the afternoon.
The famous exes coparent the children (sons Santiago, 7, Dante, 5, and daughter Ruby, 3) in homes close to one another, so it’s likely they were safely with mom.
It’s unlikely we will get much information from Sapp. The West Kendall native famously guards her privacy after the highly publicized split with the NBA great.
In January 2024, a month after their divorce was finalized, Spoelstra inked a record-breaking, eight-year contract extension worth more than $120 million with the Heat. His ex, however, moved on to her own projects, working on her own podcast called “Becoming HER,” where she interviews other women and gives her unfiltered hot takes.
