Gervonta Davis axed from Netflix bout amid new bombshell lawsuit
Gervonta “Tank” Davis is making headlines for the wrong reasons again, and his career just took a major hit.
Days after an ex filed a bombshell lawsuit against him, Netflix said that its planned match between YouTube star Jake Paul and the pro boxer was canceled. The event was to take place Nov. 14 at the Kaseya Center in downtown Miami.
The online streamer made the announcement on its website Monday, saying the move was made on the heels of the suit.
“Our team has worked closely with all parties to navigate this situation responsibly,” said Nakisa Bidarian, CEO of Most Valuable Promotions in a press release. “While we will not be moving forward with this event, our plan still remains for Jake Paul to headline an event on Netflix in 2025. Details regarding a new date, location, Jake’s opponent, and additional bouts will be shared as soon as they are finalized.”
In the Oct. 30 suit, filed in the 11th Judicial Circuit Court in Miami-Dade County, the plaintiff, identified in court papers as Courtney Rossel, accuses the WBA lightweight champ of battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
She alleges the most recent violent interaction occurred with Davis at her place of employment, gentlemen’s club Tootsie’s Cabaret in Miami Gardens, in the early morning hours of Oct. 27.
The VIP cocktail waitress claims the fighter “forcibly grabbed and dragged [her] through a stairway through the kitchen, and through the back entrance all the way into the parking garage.” The suit accuses the Baltimore native, 30, of choking, pushing, hitting and embarrassing her.
Rossel says their approximately five-month-long relationship has been tumultuous, with Davis allegedly often making threats against her. She is suffering physically and mentally, and is “in constant fear for her life,” reads the complaint.
Shortly after Rossel’s legal action, MVP released a statement that they were investigating. Davis’ trainer Calvin Ford told USA TODAY Sports the suit was “nonsense’’ and that the athlete was “doing great.”
This is hardly the first time Davis has been in hot water with the law. He was arrested in Miami Beach in July about a month after a Father’s Day incident in Doral involving the mother of his two kids. Charges were dropped in August when the alleged victim declined to prosecute.
