Bad Bunny wins big at Latin Billboards in Miami. Here’s how he celebrated
Bad Bunny’s really on a roll.
Not only is he is slated to perform the halftime show at the Super Bowl LX, the reggaeton superstar swept the Latin Billboard Music Awards Thursday night at the James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami.
Bunny received a whopping 27 nominations and snagged a total of 11 awards, including Top Latin Artist of the 21st Century, which was presented to him by Hollywood legend/fellow Puerto Rican Rita Moreno (who jokingly called him “bueno,” as in “hot”).
“[In my day] opportunities were few, almost nonexistent, and every step forward was a victory,” said the 93-year-old “West Side Story” icon. “Today, I see an artist who brings that same strength to the whole world. That same strength, that same passion that helped me never to give up.”
As Moreno presented the 31-year-old with the award, they shared a big hug and an impromptu salsa routine.
“I receive this award with pride because I know how hard I worked. Not just me, my whole team. I’m also aware this award could have been for any of the artists here tonight who have contributed to Latin music, who have inspired me, who are why I’m here,” said Bunny, admitting he didn’t prepare a speech and was speaking from the heart. “I will always identify with those artists because I consider myself equal to you ... a young man who continues to dream, with many more goals and things to do.”
The “No Me Conoce” singer assured his fans that all the accolades aren’t going to his head.
“I appreciate every one of you,” he said. “This isn’t going to boost my ego, I won’t get arrogant, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing.”
So how did the megastar celebrate his big night? By hitting the club —actually his club, Gekko — a few miles from the theater. Insiders told us Bunny (born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) hosted an afterparty at the Brickell hot spot he owns with hospitality king David Grutman.
Guests included local producer/rapper DJ Khaled; Venezuelan singer Danny Ocean; and Daddy Yankee, who recently came out of retirement and performed his spiritual new track “‘Sonríele” (”Go On and Smile”). We were told Yankee was “laughing and mingling” in the crowd.
Also in the mix: former boy bander Joe Jonas, who probably didn’t stay out too late. The 36-year-old musician is almost as busy as Bunny, with a stop on his Jonas20 Greetings From Your Hometown tour in Sunrise with his bros Friday night.
