Want your quarantine celebration to be different, Miami? Order a sushi cake

If you want to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary or some other special occasion during the coronavirus quarantine, you have to get creative.

And Pubbelly Sushi is getting creative by making and selling a sushi cake.

Don’t worry - there’s no actual cake involved, unlike Miami’s famous croqueta cake, which combines ham croquetas and actual cake, which is simultaneously intriguing and horrifying.

With the sushi cake, what you see is what you get, and what you see is sashimi and sushi rolls, with cucumbers, roe and wasabi as decorative (and delicious) toppings.

Why create a sushi cake now?

“The pandemic has caused so many people to cancel their birthday parties, weddings and anniversaries,” says Chef José Mendin of Pubbelly Sushi. “While it’s a difficult time, there are still special occasions and milestones that are important to celebrate in the coming weeks and months, even if we can’t all be together at a big party. . .. Our team continues to find creative ways to celebrate the little things in life, and our hope is that our new sushi cake brings our guests a spark of joy.”

The cakes start at $100 — sushi ain’t cheap, people — and is available at all Pubbelly Sushi locations.

Here’s how to order: Go to pubbellyglobal.com/restaurants-orders and click Pubbelly Delivery & Pick Up tab. Order the cake. Then call your local Pubbelly Sushi to specify pick up or delivery information. Or you can just call the restaurants in Aventura (305-690-7710); Brickell (786-899-5043); Dadeland (786-369-5472); or Miami Beach (305-531-9282).

Allow 24 hours for all orders. And if you’re celebrating a birthday? Maybe skip the candles.
