Can you do the ‘champeta?’ Shakira’s epic halftime dance sparks Internet challenge
Shakira’s getting people talking — and moving.
The singer’s Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Jennifer Lopez at Hard Rock Stadium Sunday night has sparked endless threads over what’s too sexy, stripper pole memes and now an adorable Internet challenge.
It’s called the Champeta Challenge, named after the epic dance Shak performed during the “Waka Waka” portion. Her halftime routine included a popular dance from the star’s native Colombia.
Viewers sitting at home may not have known what Shak was doing with her body at the time: the champeta is not something you’d see a partier pull at the club.
The champeta is a Colombian music that blends African and Caribbean rhythms. It’s fun to listen to, but apparently, it’s just as much fun to dance.
We learned a few steps by watching the superstar’s post-game YouTube tutorial with choreographer Liz Dany Campo Diaz. Shak apparently saw Diaz’s banging steps on Instagram, tracked the 18 year old Barranquillera down, and brought her to Miami for the big show.
After watching people master the not so difficult steps all over the world, do you accept the Champeta Challenge? If so, you may appear on Shakira’s Instagram stories. The 43-year-old is posting videos of regular folks doing their thing in their living room, on the street, even in the snow.
The hashtag #champetachallenge.
If you choose to accept this mission, you are not guaranteed instant fame, but at least 100 calories burned right off the bat.
