Featuring everything from martial arts to traditional Chinese customs such as the lion dance and tea ceremony, the Auckland Lantern Festival is one of Auckland's biggest and most popular cultural events in New Zealand. Following a tradition of the Han Dynasty dating back to 206 B.C., more than 800 handmade Chinese lanterns will be illuminated and displayed as part of the festivities celebrating Chinese New Year. This year’s festival, to be held Feb. 26-March 1 at Albert Park, welcomes the Year of the Goat, also known as Year of the Sheep, symbolizing peace, co-existence and tranquility.
