Even as the U.S. celebrates America's 250th anniversary with major events in cities across the country, more Americans are choosing to take to the shining sea for a cruise during Fourth of July week 2026.

Despite the big America250 events being held on land this year, AAA's 2026 Fourth of July travel forecast projects a smaller year-over-year increase in travel during the holiday week than the U.S. experienced in previous years. About 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home for Independence Day between Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, July 5, up from 71.8 million. However, the number of Americans planning to travel by air and car is about the same as it was in 2025.

According to AAA, the increase in Fourth of July travel this year is driven by other modes of transportation, like cruises, which are posting huge year-over-year gains across the board. One million more Americans - a record 21.7 million - are hitting the high seas for ocean cruises in 2026, according to AAA's 2026 cruise forecast.

AAA expects that 4.93 million Americans will take cruises, buses, and trains over Independence Day week, a 5.3% increase from 2025.

Why are more Americans taking cruises this Fourth of July?

Higher gas prices and more expensive flights to top cities for Fourth of July celebrations could be part of the reason why more Americans are choosing cruises for summer travel in 2026. But those aren't the only factors that make cruises a stronger value than most land-based vacations, even as cruise prices rise with demand.

For families traveling during summer vacation especially, cruises deliver more vacation value for the money - and convenience - than comparable land-based trips. With meals, rooms, entertainment and activities for all ages, and transportation to multiple destinations built into the cruise fare, the value is unmatched.

Plus, with new and upgraded ships sailing to Alaska and the Caribbean from popular U.S. cities like Seattle, Miami, and the Orlando area, and special America250 events happening on board, Fourth of July cruises have even more to offer in 2026.

"We had a surge in requests for July cruises," said Dennis Post of Postcard Travel Planning, Come Cruise With Me's travel agent partner. "Ships are selling out three to four weeks in advance in key Florida ports like Tampa, Port Canaveral, and Miami."

Post and his team of travel agents have been working to help cruisers hoping to secure a last-minute cabin on a July cruise. Postcard Travel Planning even has agents available on nights and weekends to assist with last-minute travel arrangements.

"We're finding a few open spots, but prices are holding high and ship, room selection, and cabin types are limited. We check daily, monitoring sold-out cruises for last-minute openings to grab canceled rooms for our clients."

Alaska cruises are a major draw for summer travel in 2026

In addition to cruising from Florida, many travelers are sailing to Alaska during Fourth of July week. The top domestic and international Independence Day travel destinations for 2026 are Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, according to AAA's forecast.

In addition to being host cities for FIFA World Cup games, both cities are hubs for Alaska cruise departures, which peak between mid-June and mid-July. Both Seattle and Vancouver are experiencing record-breaking Alaska cruise seasons in 2026 as new cruise ships and a bigger mix of cruise lines set sail to America's alluring 49th state.

Alaska cruises appeal to summer travelers who are increasingly drawn to nature-driven experiences. Today, more than four in 10 Americans say seeing wildlife in nature would be their most memorable family vacation experience, according to a 2025 survey by Holland America Line.

"What travelers are telling us is that meaningful experiences matter more than ever," said Holland America Line Senior Vice President of Alaska Operations Robert Morgenstern. "Moments like seeing a glacier for the first time or watching wildlife in its natural habitat create memories that last far beyond the voyage, and our itineraries are designed to make those moments possible."

If an Alaska cruise is on your bucket list, Postcard Travel Planning recommends booking 12-18 months in advance for the best pricing and availability.

"It's best to put a deposit down early to lock in your vacation and price," Post said. "Otherwise, you could end up with no vacation as more and more cruises sell out."
