Purchasing The Key for a cruise comes with the appeal of feeling like a VIP during your cruise without paying even more to stay in a suite. With perks like priority boarding and exclusive access to certain onboard experiences, the VIP pass can be an enticing upgrade.
Royal Caribbean calls The Key "your premier access to experiences and activities during your vacation." But does it live up to the hype? Here's what to know about The Key and how to determine if it's worth the cost for your cruise.

What you get with The Key on a Royal Caribbean cruise
Perks of cruising with Royal Caribbean's The Key program include:
- Priority embarkation during a designated arrival time.
- Carry-on bag drop off and delivery to your stateroom.
- Exclusive welcome lunch featuring a special menu.
- 20% off specialty dining when you book on the first day of your cruise.
- 50% off select onboard sports activities.
- $60 off spa services if you spend at least $250.
- Access to the fast lane for select onboard activities.
- Priority departure at tender ports of call from ship to shore.
- Reserved seating at shows in main entertainment venues.
- VOOM Surf & Stream WiFi for one device for each per person who purchases the package.
- An exclusive breakfast and choice of departure time on debarkation day.
The price of The Key varies by sailing and ship, typically ranging from about $25-50 per passenger, per day. If one passenger purchases it, everyone else in their stateroom (age six and older) is required to purchase it, too.
How to know if The Key is worth it for your Royal Caribbean cruise
Whether The Key is worth it for you depends on which perks matter most to you during your cruise. But many frequent Royal Caribbean cruisers say The Key is only really worth the cost if you're going to purchase WiFi for everyone in your stateroom anyway, provided that the cost of The Key for your sailing isn't much more than the cost of the WiFi package.
Royal Caribbean Blog's Matt Hochberg says the other benefits of The Key sound better than they really are.
"For example, priority boarding is lovely, but Royal Caribbean's boarding process is very efficient. If you get an early check-in time, I promise you'll board the ship within a few minutes of those with The Key," he said.

If The Key costs $50 per day for your seven-night cruise on a newer ship, that's an extra $350 per person. You may not get enough value out of it to justify that much of an added expense.
Many people who try The Key once say they wouldn't purchase it again, even though the VIP perks were nice to have.
"We got [The Key] for our first cruise to reduce anxiety, but probably wouldn't do it again. We weren't sure how Royal Caribbean was with getting people on board, but it was quick and easy. The WiFi is the only actual perk. The onboard lunch is a nice touch and more relaxing than Windjammer. We didn't use the special times for the activities as we don't feel we needed it. The best perk was we got to decide when we got off the ship and didn't have an assigned time," Aedora125 shared in a recent discussion about The Key in the Royal Caribbean community on Reddit.
