Can you get a quick cruise deal if you live near the port? Check the options

Whether you’re driving down Biscayne Boulevard or perched in a high-rise above Fort Lauderdale, you may see the massive ships arriving and departing PortMiami or Port Everglades.

As a local, you can be on one of those ships, too, and maybe even get a deal.

Cruise vacations aren’t just for those from out of town who fly in to go out on the high seas. People who live in South Florida can take advantage of being a short drive from two of the world’s busiest passenger ports. A third port and last year’s top one, Port Canaveral, is a day trip away.

Now is a good time to check out deals, even if you’re not ready to go on a cruise. Most cruise companies started offering specials in January, the beginning of what’s called wave season — so you can see your options and compare them to fares offered later in the year.

“This is when typically all the inventory is available,” said David Crooks, senior vice president of product and operations at World Travel Holdings, a travel agency with a corporate office in Fort Lauderdale.

Going on a cruise isn’t like going to LoanDepot Park to get a ticket for that night’s Marlins game. Just because you live near the port doesn’t mean you can show up and go.

“Those days are long gone,” said Steve Gulko, a travel advisor and senior founding member with Luxury Cruise Connections, a Miami-Dade company that helps travelers book trips.

Tight security measures imposed after Sept. 11, 2001, remain. And you’re also unlikely to find a good price so close to a departure date.

The cruise industry has enjoyed a record number of passengers and massive growth since 2022. That means many voyages are sold out several years in advance. Even when a few spots are available, cruise lines have little incentive to lower the price.

“It’s always better to book earlier than later,” Gulko said.

“Cruises are usually booked years in advance, so just showing up at a port is not a way to save money,” Stewart Chiron, an expert on cruising who writes at The Cruise Guy, told the Miami Herald. “Prices only go higher and offerings only become less.”

That’s especially true for smaller ships with unique itineraries offered once or twice a year, Gulko said.

How to get a deal if you’re a South Florida local

So what advantages, if any, do South Florida residents have?

The first may simply be time, travel experts say. Several of the deals come and go quickly. That pressures some travelers to make quick decisions. But those who live near ports can patiently scrutinize deals and fares throughout the year, and not have to plan a plane trip to get here.

“The sheer number of deals we’re seeing now is pretty exceptional,” Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief of industry publication Cruise Critic, said in an interview with the Miami Herald. And it goes across cruise lines. Current promotions catching her attention are ones where kids can cruise for free, or third and fourth guests in the same party getting steep discounts.

But she advised would-be travelers going through the deals to “pay attention to when the deal ends” as they don’t often run long. “It is likely to be replaced by another deal, but it may not be the same.”

That’s where taking time, even a full year, to review promotions can give travelers a full sense of the options.

Other things to look out for are resident rates. Several cruise lines have special year-round rates for Florida residents. The companies also offer discounted rates all year for members of the military, either active members or veterans. It’s possible that either of those promotions may be better than the current deals being promoted.

McDaniel, the Cruise Critic boss, also recommends using travel advisors because their companies often negotiate better rates with cruise lines, and they’re often the first to know about new promotions. “They can look out for deals.”

For example, Gulko says if you book a cruise through his firm, and then it finds a better rate before you’ve made final payment, they’ll offer you the lower rate, something not all cruise carriers would do. Also, his firm like ,others offers its own discounts and promotions.

“We do things that cruise lines cannot do,” Gulko said, such as provide additional amenities and concierge service.

The cruise experts also suggest using a price-checker. Cruise Critic has one, and it allows you to check out the history of pricing on a specific ship going back 90 days.

One of the most important suggestions is to look at the fine print of deals and make sure you are comparing apples to apples, advised Chiron. If you’re comparing two offers and one saves you $100 to $200 on a cabin, for instance, you should find out what kind of cabin and where on the ship it’s located.

Drink packages are commonplace on cruise ships. But for many cruise lines, you have to order around 10 drinks a day to get your full value out of it. What if only one person in your party drinks alcohol? Is that worth it?

Specialty dining promotions are also commonplace during wave season. But once you have the promotion, what if you can’t get a table? So, first, find out how big the restaurant is and make sure you’ll be able to get a reservation.

“Because of record bookings, the cruise lines aren’t giving anything away,” said Chiron, who has analyzed the industry for over 35 years and has taken over 323 cruises.

He suggested consumers “evaluate the deals and not the hype.” He also recommended travelers be open to which ships they pick and which dates. “Being flexible can often yield significant savings and better cabin types.”

The other key piece of advice is to determine what you’re looking for and to know your priorities.

Are you looking for all-inclusive or not? That’ll often determine which cruise line to look at, Gulko said. Regent Seven Seas is good for all-inclusive trips.

Are you traveling with children? Royal Caribbean, Carnival and NCL have many programs for them. Do you want a trip without kids running around? Consider Oceania’s adult-only cruises. Virgin Voyages is another option.

What kind of cabin? Where do you want to be on the ship? Anyone with motion issues fares better mid-ship. But if you want to be closer to the dining room, that means one area, and closer to the theater means a different area.

It may pay to travel elsewhere for a cruise

Which destinations do you want to reach?

This may seem counterintuitive, but South Florida locals can likely save money or get better deals by leaving the area, for example flying to Alaska, experts say.

“Airfares are better now than they’ve been in years,” said “Cruise Guy” Chiron.

Either round-trip or one-way between Vancouver and Anchorage is recommended.

“Alaska is becoming more and more popular,” among travelers from the 305, Chiron said.

Steve Gulko suggests flying round-trip between MIA and Seattle to save money and then starting your cruise there, but notes you can also fly to Vancouver or Anchorage.

“Without a doubt, I’m seeing more South Floridians looking at Alaska,” he noted. He considers it “the best location in all of North America for nature.”

Farther south but still on the West Coast is another place for South Floridians to consider, said Crooks, the World Travel Holdings executive.

“The best value is out of California,” he said. “That’s where the biggest growth has been.”

Even for South Florida people who have beaches close to home, a different scene can be paradise. Locals who sail out of PortMiami and Port Everglades have access to numerous private resorts that cruise lines have in the Caribbean. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Virgin Voyages and NCL each have at least one, and several carriers are expanding their offerings.

You can get off the ship, walk to the beach, spend time there, eat lunch at one of the free venues, then get back on the ship after a relaxing day, Gulko said. “Overall it’s great value if you just want to go the beach” in the Caribbean.
