South Florida airports are far from the snow — but feeling the impact of a winter storm

South Florida may be far from the snow, but a winter storm that blanketed the Midwest and is now hitting the mid-Atlantic is affecting flights in and out of the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports.

At least 13 arrivals and 7 departures on Monday at Miami International Airport were canceled, according to Greg Chin, communications director for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

Meanwhile, 23 arrivals and 12 departures were canceled at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, said Paris Tyburski, a spokesperson for the Broward County Aviation Department.

Expect delays as well.

AccuWeather says major travel disruptions will continue through the regions into Monday night “as a dangerous winter storm moves through the mid-Atlantic with snow, ice and freezing rain.”

“Snow falling at 1-2 inches per hour is very difficult for road crews and plow trucks to keep up with. Persistent and heavy snow bands could lead to accumulations of nearly a foot or more in some spots in the mid-Atlantic,” AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter said.

AccuWeather is forecasting 6 to 10 inches of snow through Monday night across the Appalachians through the Mid-Atlantic to the East Coast, including the I-95 corridor in northern Virginia and Maryland.

Here’s a look at cancellations at MIA and FLL as of early Monday afternoon:

Airport officials recommend travelers check with their airlines for most up-to-date flight information. They can also check MIA’s online flight tracker. The MIA flight tracker shows expected arrivals and departures with options to use a drop-down menu to narrow results. It shows the carrier, flight number and where the plane is going to or coming from. It also gives real-time updates on the flight’s arrival or departure status, which concourse the terminal is in, and the location of baggage claim.

FLL’s flight tracker works by flight or route. You’ll need to know the date, along with the airline carrier and flight number or the departure and arrival airport. The tool also gives people the option to see a list of all expected arrivals and departures and details on the flight’s terminal and baggage claim, too.
