Flying to see your father? You may be stuck a bit in an airport terminal
With a long weekend approaching with both Father’s Day and Juneteenth on Sunday — and some off work on Monday in observance of the latter federal holiday — South Florida’s main airports could be seeing some backup. There may be flight cancellations and delays that could frustrate travelers.
On Friday afternoon, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) spokeswoman Arlene Satchell noted that there were already some flight cancellations and delays for the busy travel weekend.
According to the tracking site FlightAware, FLL had seen 128 delays and 20 flights canceled by Friday afternoon.
“Beyond that, I haven’t heard of anything unusual occurring at FLL, except that it’s shaping up to be a busy weekend,” Satchell said.
At Miami International Airport (MIA), spokesman Greg Chin said around 4 p.m. that there were 144 flights delayed and 31 flights canceled so far Friday. MIA was seeing 75% of arrivals and 66% of departures running on time Friday.
“Weather in the New York area is affecting flights to and from there,” Chin said.
According to the National Weather Service, Friday night through Monday should be clear, sunny and breezy in the Kennedy and LaGuardia airport regions in New York.
Thunderstorms are likely in Miami-Dade and Broward on Sunday and Monday, however.
According to CBS News, the combination of recent severe storms and the increase in summer traveling — summer officially begins Tuesday, June 21, but schools have been out for weeks — is leading to a travel crush.
By mid-morning Friday in the eastern United States, airlines canceled more than 1,000 flights after canceling more than 1,700 on Thursday, according to FlightAware, CBS News reported.
“Airports with the most cancellations were those in Charlotte, North Carolina, a major hub for American Airlines; LaGuardia and Newark Liberty in the New York City area; and Reagan Washington National outside Washington, D.C.,” CBS News said.
