What happens when your recliner catches fire? It gets recalled along with the sofa

Supervisors and spouses are supposed to light a fire under your buns, not the chair or sofa in which you’re sitting. That’s why Southern Motion recalled about 2,300 Wireless Power reclining chairs and sofas that each cost $1,000 to $2,500.

The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission release: “The lithium-ion batteries used to power the “Wireless Power” reclining furniture can overheat, posing a fire hazard.”

And, the release says Southern Motion “is aware of six incidents of batteries overheating and causing fires to the chairs and floor coverings.”

The company officially is offering only repair, although consumers could probably get a refund if they insisted. Southern Motion wants customers to contact them by phone (800-368-8865 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time, Monday through Friday) or email (wprecall@southernmotion.com) to arrange an in-home repair. Credit will be given for the cost of the “Wireless Power” option that required the lithium-ion battery.
