Over half-a-million diapers will be distributed as virus increases demand. Here’s where
As some needed household supplies become scarce during the novel coronavirus pandemic, two Miami organizations are giving away more than 500,000 diapers.
Diapers are a hot commodity during the pandemic. The Miami Diaper Bank has seen an increase of 600% in requests.
In order to help with demand, The Children’s Trust has donated $95,000 to the diaper bank, or the equivalent of about 500,000 diapers.
“Families with babies, infants and toddlers have been among the hardest hit economically during the coronavirus pandemic. One of their biggest challenges is getting diapers,” said James R. Haj, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust. “The Miami Diaper Bank’s mission is to step up and fill the void for families who can’t get enough diapers and that need has never been more pressing than right now.”
The Children’s Trust donation is the largest in the diaper bank’s history.
The diapers will be given out over the next few months. One distribution drive will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at Curley’s House of Style, at 6025 NW Sixth Court.
The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is also distributing bundles of diapers to families who participate in the Blind Babies program. The diapers will be distributed through a drive-through system in its parking lot.
From 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Florida Rep. Nicholas X. Duran and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins will help Miami Lighthouse for the Blind give out diapers to families of newborns through 5-year-olds at the lighthouse, at 601 SW Eighth Ave.
“Many of the participants in the Blind Babies program are lower-income families who are facing major financial challenges during the current period of social distancing and high unemployment,” said Miami Lighthouse President and CEO Virginia Jacko. “Our goal is to make a difference during this time of tremendous need.”
The Blind Babies program supports families with blind children through learning activities, according to the Lighthouse.
