Noticing more hair in your brush lately? A new serum might help

Hair thinning affects more than half of all men and roughly 30% of women at some point in their lives, but treatment options have historically been limited. Now, a topical serum powered by platelet-derived exosomes is showing clinical promise for improving hair density and scalp health at home.

What are exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny particles released by cells that carry growth factors and proteins used in tissue repair and cell-to-cell communication. In the scalp, platelet-derived exosomes are thought to wake up dormant hair follicles, extend the active growth phase of the hair cycle and reduce the chronic inflammation that gradually causes follicles to shrink over time, leading to hair thinning and loss.

What does the research show?

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery followed 39 participants with self-perceived thinning hair for nine months. Those using the Plated Skin Science HAIR Serum saw statistically significant improvements in hair density, scalp coverage and volume starting at just one month in, with improvements continuing through the end of the study.

Imaging data confirmed that hairs per square centimeter increased by more than 13% from baseline. No side effects were reported.

Is this better than other treatments?

If you’ve tried traditional options like minoxidil, finasteride and in-office PRP, a daily topical serum could be worth a try. This serum is convenient and, according to the latest research, comes with no known side effects. It’s applied once a day to thinning areas and doesn’t require a prescription or a trip to a clinic.

Talk to your doctor about ordering labs to diagnose the underlying causes of hair loss. Supplements like Viviscal and Nutrofol should also be taken.

Bottom line

Hair loss is common, but it doesn’t have to be inevitable. If you’ve been watching your part widen or your ponytail shrink, a topical exosome serum backed by peer-reviewed clinical data is worth a look.
