How a week in Istanbul transformed her way of eating
I just returned from a visit to the land of kebabs, baklava and wonderful fresh fish. A week in Istanbul is a treat for all the senses. Particularly the sense of taste and smell for those of us who love food.
For me, it was a chance to replenish my spice collection in an exotic location. And shopping at the giant Spice Bazaar in Istanbul is an adventure.
First purchase was beautiful golden orange ground turmeric. This herb is described as having a warm earthy flavor. Its active ingredient, curcumin, is a powerful anti-inflammatory and often taken to help with arthritis and to aid in recovery from exercise-related soreness. It’s also a good source of manganese, iron, potassium and vitamins C and B6.
Turmeric is a key ingredient in golden milk, which I’ve often recommended to clients as a bedtime drink. It also works well in fish recipes, rice and vegetables. You can find a lifetime of recipes using turmeric online. What’s important is that there’s always a little bit of pepper in every recipe with turmeric since it’s the pepper that makes it more absorbable.
Next up was cumin, one of my favorites. I love the flavor that it adds to foods, but it also has numerous medicinal benefits. Cumin stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, which can relieve bloating and diarrhea.
Some studies have shown that cumin powder can lower bad LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. And other studies have shown it can help with managing Type 2 diabetes by reducing fasting blood glucose. Cumin is often found in chilies, soups and curries. I like it sprinkled on vegetables.
Mezze is a grouping of small hot or cold dishes that are served together at the table. This is a common Turkish and Middle Eastern custom and often includes hummus, pita and salads.
You usually get enough that it can be your whole meal. It’s a beautiful way of sharing food and conversation. I plan on making more mezze meals at home.
