When it comes to sunscreen, the United States still lags behind Europe. Because the FDA classifies sunscreens as over-the-counter drugs, new ingredients must go through a lengthy approval process. One ingredient in particular, called tinsosorb S or BEMT, has been used in Europe for over two decades and may soon be approved for use here.

In the meantime, if you will be traveling abroad over the holidays, consider buying SPF that contains this ingredient. Tinosorb can be found in many European brands, including Eucerin, La Roche-Posay and others.

What’s special about BEMT?

Tinosorb S, also known as bemotrizinol or bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) is one of the most advanced SPF ingredients available in Europe. The most notable qualities that set it apart from other UV filters on the market in the U.S. include:

High photostability. Unlike many older filters that break down under sunlight, BEMT remains highly stable even after significant UV exposure, meaning the formula retains its strength longer.

Strong broad-spectrum protection. BEMT also provides strong protection against both UVA (320 – 400 nm) and UVB (280 – 320 nm) rays, including a peak absorption for deep-penetrating UVA and UVB rays.

Hybrid action. The molecular structure of BEMT allows it to both absorb UV rays (like chemical sunscreens) and reflect or scatter them (like physical sunscreens). This dual mechanism boosts protection and supports overall formula stability.

Gentle and smooth. BEMt is oil-soluble, giving it a smooth, non-chalky texture on the skin. It is also known to be gentle enough for sensitive and acne-prone skin types.

When will BEMT be available in the US?

The wait for BEMT approval in the United States has been more than 20 years in the making. However, at the 2025 Sunscreen Symposium Lake Buena Vista, Florida, industry experts shared that BEMT is expected to receive FDA approval by the second half of 2026. This would be a major milestone for sun protection in the U.S., as it would be the first new UV filter approved since 1999!
