Some doctors use one type of facial filler, while others use another. Should I worry?
Q. I’ve gone to several different facial plastic surgeons, plastic surgeons, dermatologists and even some med spas and every time I go, they use different products for fillers. Should I be worried if one uses one versus the other?
A. It’s common to encounter different filler products when visiting various facial plastic surgeons, dermatologists, or med spas—and it’s not necessarily a cause for concern.
There are several reputable filler brands on the market, including Juvederm (by Allergan), Restylane (by Galderma), RHA Collection (by Revance), and others. Each line offers a variety of formulations that differ in thickness, flexibility, and longevity — some better suited for lips, others for cheeks or fine lines.
Doctors may favor certain products because they’re more familiar with their performance. Others choose based on scientific characteristics, such as cross-linking technology, cohesiveness or lifting capacity. Some practices also carry exclusive or limited-distribution products or respond to manufacturer promotions or pricing.
You shouldn’t be worried as long as the filler is FDA-approved, purchased from a legitimate source (not gray market) and injected by a qualified professional. What matters more than the brand is the injector’s experience, aesthetic judgment and understanding of facial anatomy.
However, if you’ve had good results with a specific product, it’s okay to request it again or ask why a different one is being recommended.
If you’re unsure, ask the provider what product they plan to use, why they chose it for you, and where it’s being placed.
