Q. I’m thinking of having my eyes done. What are your thoughts about choosing a surgeon for this operation?

A. Choosing the right surgeon for eyelid surgery — also known as blepharoplasty — is one of the most important decisions you can make. Your concerns are valid: The eyes are the most delicate and expressive features on the face, and poor outcomes can lead to unnatural shape, drooping lids, asymmetry or problems with vision if the surgery is done improperly.

To minimize these risks, you should start by looking for a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, plastic surgeon or oculoplastic surgeon. These specialists have advanced training specifically in the anatomy and aesthetics of the eyes and face.

Ask how many eyelid surgeries the surgeon performs each year, and be sure to review before and after photos of actual patients to give you a sense of the surgeon’s aesthetic style and consistency.

A good surgeon will spend time listening to your concerns, evaluating your anatomy carefully and explaining realistic expectations. You should never feel rushed or pressured.

Ask about their approach to maintain a natural look. And ask how often do their patients need red-reduce surgery, or revision surgery, after the initial surgery.

Finally, trust your gut. You should feel confident not only in the surgeon’s technical ability, but also in their aesthetic judgment and communication style.

When done correctly, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate your appearance without altering your identity. It’s about looking like yourself —just more rested.
