When is the right time to have a facelift?

Typically, facelifts are done by people in their 40s to 60s, as this age range often coincides with signs of aging. During these years, skin elasticity decreases and deeper wrinkles and sagging become more pronounced.

However, the best time for a facelift isn’t strictly tied to age. Rather, the skin’s condition and the extent of aging also play a role.

The primary indicators that a facelift might be beneficial include deep nasolabial folds, jowls, sagging skin in the mid-face and neck, and loss of muscle tone creating a double chin. When these signs become noticeable and begin to affect one’s self-confidence, it may be time to consider the procedure.

It’s also important to consider overall health. Candidates should be in good physical condition, as certain medical conditions and medications can affect surgery outcomes. I have operated on patients who are in their 60, 70s and even 80s!

Sometimes, facelifts may have to be done early due to significant weight loss, which can affect facial volume and cause the skin to lose its elasticity. With a growing number of people taking drugs to lose weight quickly, facelifts may be necessary as early 30 to 40 years old.

Consulting with a qualified facial plastic or plastic surgeon is crucial to determining if a facelift would be appropriate.

Additionally, individuals should have realistic expectations and be emotionally prepared for surgery and recovery. Timing a facelift around life events to allow for proper healing without added stress is also advisable.

Ultimately, the right time for a facelift varies for each person, guided by a person’s aging signs, overall health and personal readiness. An informed decision made in consultation with a trusted surgeon ensures the best possible outcome.
